Citroen’s spiritual successor to the Mehari beach buggy could be nearing production following a new web competition that offers potential buyers the chance to spend a weekend at the beach with the wacky Frankfurt motor show concept.
Staging the competition in seven European markets, including France, Germany, the UK, Italy and Spain, the competition allows potential buyers to take the Cactus M concept away to the beach and test it over a weekend — even allowing the winners to sleep in its innovative roof-cum-pop-up tent that can be used as a bivouac for two people.
Said to be “inspired by the surfing spirit”, the Cactus M concept came with a pair of obligatory roof-mounted surfboards and a salt-proof interior that can be washed down at the end of the day.
Fuelling rumours, the Cactus M could be green-lit for limited production is Citroen’s own CEO, Linda Jackson, who told Automotive News Europe: "We have sold 100,000 units of the Citroen Cactus in the first full year and we decided we wanted to take it even further."
Of course Jackson’s remarks could also be interpreted that the Cactus M is, in reality, a sign-post that the French car-maker is actually hinting at a more conventional SUV spun off the successful Cactus. If so, expect the windowless doors and inflatable roof to be consigned to concept car history.
