Citroen DS3 ups the ante for 2012

French marque's compact hatch adds new drivetrain and more features for fewer Francs

Now cheaper than it was at launch – and with more features to boot – the Citroen DS3 hatch is bolstered by a revised engine and transmission package, adding better performance and efficiency to the sporty little package.

The distinctively styled DS3 is still customisable through a nearly endless array of paint, upholstery, trim and material combinations, but now arrives with Bluetooth telephony as standard, auxiliary and USB audio connectivity, and an optional eight-speaker premium Hi-Fi package.

In Australia, DS3 is offered with a choice of two outputs (70kW and 115kW) from its 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is sourced from a joint venture with BMW. The low output offering is mated exclusively to an EGS robotised manual transmission which reduces combined cycle fuel consumption figures to 5.5L/100km (from 7.0L/100km). The turbocharged mill arrives as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, which is now accompanied by a Gear Efficiency Indicator.

As before, DS3 is available in two trim levels: DStyle and DSport. Citroen DS3 DStyle features a leather steering wheel, sports seats, MP3-compatible CD/tuner, front foglamps, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, stability control, six airbags, remote central locking, LED daytime running lights, climate control and 16-inch alloy wheels.

DS3 DSport models add sporty styling cues, chrome side strips, grille and door mirrors, a rear spoiler with high-level brake light, twin exhaust outlet, drilled alloy pedals and 17-inch alloy wheels.

“We are not letting the DS3 rest on its laurels,” said Citroen Australia general manager, Miles Williams. “The DS3 has already be praised in the media for its pricing, but for the new model year we have also dropped the recommended retail prices.”

The Citroen DS3 DStyle is priced from $26,990 (MRLP) and the DS3 DSport from $29,990 (MRLP). Both models are available now.
