Citroen Grand C4 Picasso rejigged

Refreshed French people-mover gets revised looks, specs, prices and – soon – a new name

A revised Citroen C4 Grand Picasso is now available in Australia, where the seven-seat French people-mover can be had for less than $40,000 for the first time.

Previously, the five-seat C4 Picasso was a petrol-only model priced just under $40K and the seven-seat C4 Grand Picasso was a diesel-only affair priced around $45K.

Following the axing of the five-seat petrol model, the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso seven-seater is now available with both a THP petrol engine (priced from $38,490 plus on-road costs) and an HDi diesel engine (from $44,490).

Both front-wheel drive models are offered in Exclusive trim with a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

However, a new eight-speed automatic now available in Europe’s entry-level diesel model will eventually become available in Australia.

As well, Citroen Australia is also likely to eventually adopt the C4 Picasso’s new European name -- SpaceTourer -- which better distinguishes it from the C4 Cactus SUV that's due on sale here in facelifted form later this year.

For now, both C4 Grand Picasso models come standard with seven seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system with satellite-navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, DAB digital radio, electric tailgate, keyless entry/start and a panoramic sunroof.

On the safety front, both versions also get speed limit recognition, active lane assist, active blind-spot assist and driver attention monitoring, but only the diesel comes with autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control with stop/go function.

Options include premium paint, 18-inch Python alloy wheels a Leather Lounge Pack comprising nappa leather-appointed seat trim, front seat heating massaging, driver’s lumbar adjustment, LED reading lights for the aircraft-style rear trays and a front passenger seat with height adjustment, flat-fold function (allowing load up to 2.5m long) and electric footrest.

Under the bonnet, the 121kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder meets the Euro 5 emissions standard, consumes 6.5L/100km and accelerates the car to 100kmh in 10.2 seconds.

That makes it as quick as the 110kW/370Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel version, which lowers fuel consumption to 4.5L/100km with the aid of idle-stop tech.

“This market is dominated by petrol drivetrains and we have worked with Citroen in France to offer a petrol drivetrain for Australian customers and in doing so, we have not only boosted appeal but also value,” said Citroen Australia managing director Anouk Poelmann.

“It’s a very exciting time for Citroen as we evolve the Australian business and product to return the brand to its roots of being a unique, European designed and built vehicle marque.

“Along with the entire Citroen portfolio, Grand Picasso petrol demonstrates that we are working to strengthen our product offerings by reducing complexity and introducing product better aligned to the demands of Australian buyers,” said Poelmann.

Based on PSA’s latest EMP2 platform, the Citroen Grand Picasso is covered by a five-year/unlimited-km warranty and roadside assist.
