Citroen has announced plans to release a radical diesel-electric hybrid version of its upcoming DS5 model.
The car will form part of a new premium lineup with correspondingly numbered models set to sit above the C3, C4 and C5.
Due out in 2011, the diesel hybrid version will offer what Citroen calls "a new breed of four-wheel drive", giving the driver the choice of diesel-powered FWD, electric-powered RWD or AWD integrating the two.
The setup promises what the company coyly calls "a considerable fuel saving and a drop of up to 35 per cent in CO2 emissions compared to a same-sized car".
PSA has begun pilot simulation, modelling and process engineering projects at its Mulhouse and Sochaux factories in France to develop components for inclusion in several models in the marque's upcoming premium product line.
The DS label was relaunched with the unveiling of the Inside at the 2009 Geneva motor show this year to showcase what the company calls its "creativity, strong and emotional styling, quality in presentation and finish, unique driving sensations and functional qualities".
The first production model bearing the nameplate will be the DS3, set to arrive in showrooms in 2010, with the DS4 soon after.
Nothing is firmed up for Australian launch yet, but on all three fronts we're likely to get the lineup a few months after European launch, so expect the DS3 and DS4 mid-late 2010, the DS5 late 2011.
