The UK-sourced Honda Civic Type R will continue to be sold in Australia. Honda Australia released a statement late today confirming that the 148kW terror would remain on sale here beyond the end of this year.
The importer was pre-empting local concerns that the car might be dropped in Australia. In some markets, the Euro 4-compliant Type R will be discontinued prior to the introduction of the Euro 5 emissions standard in January 2011.
Australia is yet to mandate Euro 5, although the federal government and the automotive industry are currently at work hammering out a localised version to be introduced for petrol vehicles, possibly by 2013.
Honda's plant at Swindon in England, where the Type R Civic is built, exports the car to Singapore and Japan as well as Australia. There is no information to hand at this stage as to whether the factory will upgrade the Type R to meet the new emissions legislation.
