Classic car event marks half century for National Motor Museum

Nearly 2000 classic cars will make the journey from Adelaide's West Beach to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood tomorrow, Sunday, September 27.

Now in its 35th year, the 2015 Bay to Birdwood is a celebration of modern classics – only vehicles manufactured between 1956 and 1978 are permitted to enter.

This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the National Motor Museum at Birdwood, along with milestones for the Goggomobil, MGA (pictured), Sunbeam and Simca.

The start of the event is at Adelaide Shores, West Beach, where up to 1750 classic vehicles will assemble on the ovals of Barratt Reserve.

At 8:30am Glen Dix, famed flag-waver from the days of the Adelaide Grand Prix, will officially wave off the starters, but it will take at least 2 hours for all the vehicles to clear the ovals.

En route to the Museum, this year's cavalcade will make its journey up the Anzac Highway, Greenhill Road, Fullarton Road, Dequetteville Terrace and then onto North East Road.

Making a right turn at Grand Junction Road, the classic fleet will then make its way onto Lower North East Road through Houghton before continuing to Birdwood via the historic townships of Inglewood and Gumeracha.

From approximately 10:15am onwards, the entrants will begin to arrive at the National Motor Museum, where families, motoring enthusiasts, admirers and the like will also be able to see over 300 historic vehicles on display.

Live entertainment will also be featured on the day, including sets by Buddy 4, the Royal Australian Navy Band of South Australia as well as Paul Fenech's Elvis Alive show.

Entrants and the general public are also encouraged to dress up in their best 1950s, 60s or 70s outfits to maximise their chances of being chosen for the Fashions in the Field parade.
