Classic Holden cars head to auction

Tenterfield Holden dealership is offloading historic cars, workshop equipment and memorabilia

Some of Holden’s greatest hits are up for grabs in an online auction this week after a well-known Holden dealership closed its doors last year.

Sexton and Green, a Holden dealership in the northern NSW town of Tenterfield, is auctioning off its showroom collection, which includes cars from the 1950s, ’60s and later-day Holdens.

They include 1951 and 1953 Holden FX sedans, an original 1964 Holden EH, 1967 Holden HR Ute and a 2017 Holden VF Commodore Motorsport Edition – all of which can be viewed here.

At the time of writing, the bidding had reached $80,500 for the special-edition VF Holden Commodore – well above its $61,790 (plus on-road costs) asking price back in 2017 – as well as $19,200/$27,200 for the 1951/53 FX sedans respectively, $17,142 for the EH and $28,200 for the HR ute.

The auction also includes workshop equipment such as a spray booth, hoists, tool sets and benches, plus decades’ worth of motoring and motorsport memorabilia.

Auctioneer Grays Online described the collection as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for Holden fans to acquire pieces from the second-oldest Holden dealership in the country.

The auction house said in a press release that “there’s something for everyone, from HDT collectors’ items to classic signs to auto manuals”.

Grays business development manager, Josh Newton, said: “This is a truly amazing collection of unique Holden vehicles being offered for auction, from late-model cars right back to classic cars from the 1950s, a golden era for Australian motoring.

“Sexton and Green were pioneers of the Australian motoring industry and the closing of the Tenterfield Holden Dealership represents the end of an era, and the chance for Holden enthusiasts to grab a piece of history.”

First opened in 1919, the Tenterfield dealership rode through the highs and lows of Australian history, including the Great Depression and World War II.

The timing of the auction is no coincidence: values of classic and modern Holdens continue to climb following the closure of local manufacturing in 2017 and the subsequent retirement of the Holden brand in 2020.

The online auction will wrap up on August 18.
