Mitsubishi's Colt has received a new engine, a revised model line-up and undergone cosmetic upgrades for 2006.
Replacing the Mirage in 2004, the Colt has been a regular though not outstanding sales performer for Mitsubishi. It accounts for around 4.5 per cent of sales in its segment which is dominated by Hyundai’s Getz.
For 2006, the Colt gets a new 1.5-litre all-alloy DOHC four-cylinder MIVEC (variable valve timing) engine. The new more-powerful engine is Euro 3 compliant and replaces the cast-iron blocked 1.5 which launched the car. Maximum power is 77kW at 6000rpm (up 5kW) with torque also increased (up 9Nm) to 141Nm at 4000rpm (down 250rpm).
According to Mitsubishi fuel economy has also improved. The new Colt registers combined consumption of 5.6lt/100km down from 6.4. Range has been further extended in the new model thanks to an increase in fuel capacity from 42 to 45 litres.
The Colt's model designations have also been massaged with the XLS replaced by a VRX -- a la Lancer and 380. The entry-level LS remains.
In terms of cosmetics both models get revised styling for the front and rear bumpers, grille and lower grille. Taillights have been changed too.
Inside, the VRX gets sports seats and alloy pedals, while the LS gets a tacho as standard fitment. The 'smart seat' compartment in the passenger-side front seat of both models has been eliminated, but there is new seat trim and white-faced sports dials (were blue) that Mitsubishi says gives the interior a more sporty appearance.
Outside, the VRX gets a chrome exhaust and headlamp changes to differentiate it from the ‘cooking’ model. Exterior colour options have been revised also.
Standard features across the Colt range include continuously variable transmission, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, aircon, power steering, power windows, power exterior mirrors with fold control, remote keyless entry, engine immobiliser and driver and passenger air bags.
Prices are unchanged. The LS kicks off from $18,990 with the VRX priced at $20,990.
