COMING SOON: 2022 Volkswagen ID.3

German giant’s latest hatch is Golf-sized on the outside and has the interior space of a Passat – and it’s all-electric

Volkswagen may already have battery-powered versions of Golf and the up!, but the 2022 Volkswagen ID.3 is a very different kettle of fish.

The first vehicle to market on the company’s brand-new €8 billion dedicated electric vehicle architecture dubbed MEB, the Volkswagen ID.3 is an EV without the compromises required of a converted combustion car – and it shows.

For starters, it’s roughly the size of the Golf outside and delivers almost the same space as the Passat inside.

It’s fast, handles well and has all the mod-cons – even a dedicated voice-activation system that tells jokes in German!

But the most impressive thing about the ID.3 is its refinement. It has a big, airy cabin that’s well-finished, comfortable and makes you feel as though you’re in a class of car larger.

Indeed, we reckon that even if you haven’t quite decided if the EV thing is for you yet, the Volkswagen ID.3 is well worth a look.

The only problem is overseas demand and COVID-19 might conspire to prevent Australians gaining access to Volkswagen’s most advanced hatchback until 2022 or later.
