COMING SOON: Mazda MX-30

Mazda’s first SUV coupe will arrive in Australia in 2021 and the headline act is a battery-electric version

Mazda has confirmed its first fully-electric model to go on sale Down Under. The new Mazda MX-30 is a stylish SUV coupe that will reach showrooms in 2021 in both battery-electric and petrol-engined mild-hybrid form.

The Mazda MX-30 is a four-door SUV coupe with a difference. Mazda RX-8-style rear-hinged rear doors are a signature of the model, but the front-end design is fresh and progresses Mazda’s Kodo styling language. Take it from us – it’s not going to be mistaken for just another Mazda CX-5.

The petrol-engined MX-30 will beat the EV’s arrival by a few months and will probably outsell it by 10 to one, but the battery version is the big news.

It features a 107kW/271Nm electric powertrain and a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack which should deliver around 220km range.

Mazda reckons this is sized to suit the target buyer’s inner-urban lifestyle but also says it minimises CO2 emissions throughout the vehicle’s life cycle, from resource extraction through to battery disposal.

The battery can be charged in three hours via a 6.6kW AC wallbox or in 36 minutes using a 50kW fast charger.

Mazda’s being tight-lipped on both the full MX-30 model rollout and the pricing.

It won’t be cheap though – even the petrol version. As both a new style and technology icon for the brand, you can expect to pay a premium...
