Component firms to get US exports help
Local parts suppliers make move on US auto industryAustralian automotive component producers are to join forces in a bid to break into the lucrative US vehicle market.
With federal government funding, a group of suppliers will form Team Australia Automotive (TAA) to target US opportunities for local companies.
Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said on Tuesday the government would provide $280,000 to get the scheme off the ground.
It would be further backed by the Victorian and South Australian governments and the Federation of Automotive Products Manufacturers.
The Kenmar Corporation in the US has also been appointed to establish links in the US with General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler.
And it will lead a delegation of Australian parts producers on a visit to Detroit in the second half of 2007.
Mr Macfarlane said TAA had already contacted 28 Australian parts producers interested in joining the US push and he believed the initiative would bring quick results.
"The next five years will be critical to the Australian automotive industry," the minister said.
"The transition is challenging but we are already seeing the emergence of a new industry.
"It is outward looking and able to hold its own on the world stage."
