Confirmed: 2024 GWM Tank 500 pricing and specs

UPDATED 14/02/2024 3:20pm: GWM Haval Australia has released pricing for its 2024 GWM Tank 500 Ultra Hybrid, the flagship version of the all-new large off-road SUV range, and it's set to cost $73,990 drive-away.

That makes the top-spec Tank 500 the most expensive GWM product sold in Australia to date, comfortably eclipsing the smaller Tank 300 Ultra Hybrid priced from $60,990 drive-away.

The Chinese brand is still yet to announce when the theoretically more affordable turbo-petrol V6 variants are due Down Under. The hybrids will entry local showrooms in May and an announcement is expected by then.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 23/01/2024: GWM Australia is confident its all-new Toyota Prado-bashing family SUV, the 2024 GWM Tank 500, will take the disruptive Chinese brand to the “next level” with sharp pricing of $66,490 drive-away.

The seven-seat, hybrid-powered 4x4 large off-road SUV will be offered in two well-equipped model grades – Lux, which is due in showrooms in May, and the flagship Ultra, which comes later this year and is still to be priced, but will slide in under $75,000 drive-away, according to GWM.

We’ve already driven the Tank 500 in China, although Aussie versions have been undergoing local testing in Victoria and should be better suited to our market.

“In terms of positioning, value for money and capability, very little can compete with it,” GWM Australia marketing chief Steve Maciver told carsales today.

“Tank 300 has proven very successful and we think the Tank 500 will continue this momentum.

“It will bring the GWM Tank brand to the next level because it represents significant value and brings something unique to the market.”

As well as targeting the Toyota Prado, which enters a new generation later this year, the Tank 500 will be pitched at off-road-capable seven-seat SUVs such as the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X.

All versions of the 2024 GWM Tank 500 will be powered by a turbocharged petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, as found on the GWM Tank 300.

The electric motor and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine generate 255kW of power and 648Nm of torque combined, which is more than the incoming 2024 Toyota Prado’s mild-hybrid four-cylinder turbo-diesel (150kW/500Nm).

The plug-less hybrid powertrain hooks up to a nine-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4x4 driveline to deliver claimed fuel consumption of 8.5L/100km.

It has a large 80-litre fuel tank, which would theoretically allow for a 940km cruising range.

The Tank 500 can also tow a 3000kg braked trailer, while off-road capability is aided by its rugged ladder-frame chassis, 224mm ground clearance, extensive underbody protection, dual-range transfer case, rear differential lock and all-terrain control system with 11 drive modes.

It has useful approach, departure and breakover angles of 30, 24 and 22.5 degrees respectively, plus a wading depth of 800mm.

In China, a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 (265kW/500Nm) and a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder (135kW/480Nm) are available, but neither have been confirmed for Australia.

The 2024 GWM Tank 500 comes with plenty of high-grade features fitted as standard, including LED headlights, a sunroof, tinted rear windows, synthetic leather upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

The top-spec Tank 500 Ultra upgrades to Nappa leather-appointed seats with heating, cooling and massage functionality, while the second-row seats are also heated and cooled. The third-row seats are electric-folding on the Ultra, too.

All Tank 500 models get a big 14.6-inch central touch-screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto and a 360-degree parking camera system with an auto parking system.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is part of the deal, as is three-zone climate control with air vents for all three seat rows.

The Ultra gets an upgraded 12-speaker Infinity audio system.

Four exterior colours are offered at launch: Onyx Silver, Crystal Black, Dune Gold and Marble White. The latter is a no-cost option, while the other colours carry a $595 premium.

The Ultra also gets optional blue/cream Nappa leather-accented interior colouring, but only in combination with Marble White and Crystal Black exterior colours.

The new 2024 GWM Tank 500 has the same sizeable 2850mm wheelbase as the Toyota LandCruiser brothers but the Chinese 4WD’s 5078mm length makes it longer than the Prado (4920mm) and LandCruiser (5015mm).

However, its 1934mm width makes it narrower than the Prado (1988mm) and LC300 (1980mm).

GWM dealers around Australia – a network of 99 sites, growing to around 120 by the end of 2024 – are not yet taking pre-orders for the Tank 500, but prospective buyers can register their interest on the brand’s website.

“We’re expecting solid supply, we have high hopes for the new model,” said Maciver said.

GWM’s sales increased by 45 per cent in 2023, to more than 36,000 units, and the arrival of the GWM Tank 500 in the second quarter of 2024 is expected to bolster its position in the marketplace.
