Continuing improvement in vehicle fleet CO2 emissions

New cars replacing old ones are reducing carbon emissions for Australia's vehicle fleet

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) voluntarily monitors the average CO2 emissions from new cars entering the Australian market.

For 2007, the average CO2 emissions figure for light vehicles had dropped from 230.3g/km to 226.1g/km. At this rate, according to the FCAI, the new car industry will meet its target of 222g/km by 2010.

New cars have, on average, reduced CO2 emissions by 10 per cent over the past five years, contrasting with the situation in many mature markets, such as some European countries, where the CO2 emissions figures have barely changed over the same period.

This suggests that new cars in Australia have come from a lower base -- and will eventually reach the same impasse as in Europe.

However the FCAI and its members remain committed to advancing the cause.

"These figures demonstrate that the industry is continuing to implement new technology to lower the impact passenger cars have on the environment, said FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar.

"Improvements in engine technology, changes in market segmentation, as well as an increased uptake in alternative fuels such as clean diesel, are being reflected in the lower carbon emissions."

Among other technological advances, the FCAI is looking towards improvements in fuel quality for the next wave of air quality improvements from new car manufacturers and importers in Australia.
