Yet another classic car show is making a triumphant return this year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 376 classics set to descend on the Snowy Mountains town of Cooma for the 2022 edition of Motorfest this November.
Usually a bi-annual event, Motorfest hasn’t taken place since 2019 after it was thwarted last year by the lingering coronavirus, hence its 12-month postponement and subsequent expansion.
Everything from vintage classics through to the latest hot rods, performance cars and electric vehicles will be on display at the Cooma Showgrounds along with trucks, tractors, boats, bikes and machinery.
Organisers are tipping this year’s event to be the biggest edition yet due to its hiatus and in a bid to draw even more people and displays in, they’ve waived the entry fee for all display vehicles – general admission will be $5 per head with kids under 12 getting in for free.
Adding to the festivities will be the arrival of around 80 cars taking part in the re-enactment of the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon, in which Cooma serves as the last checkpoint before the Warwick Farm Racecourse finish.
The convoy will be welcomed with a celebratory dinner and farewelled at a dedicated breakfast the next day at the Cooma Car Museum.
“Not only are we thrilled with the way this year’s event is shaping up in terms of numbers, we’re also delighted to host the London to Sydney Marathon cars and their crews,” Cooma Car Club president Rogan Corbett said.
“The entry list for the Marathon is fascinating, given it includes eight out of the only 10 original vehicles still in existence.
“It will be fantastic to have the cars here as part of our display – it will ensure Motorfest really does have something for everyone.”
Star entrants confirmed for this year’s event thus far include a BMW Isetta bubble car, an LJ Holden Torana XU-1 and a matching SLR, several Ford Falcon GTs of various eras, Holden Monaros spanning the entire lineage, Ford Mustangs, original Snowy Mountains Scheme Land Rovers and a 16-litre Kenworth truck.
Australian motorsport hero Colin Bond will be the guest of honour, something Corbett is especially proud of.
“Many of our members followed Colin through his racing career and we are all looking forward to hearing more stories from those days,” he said.
“He will be giving a talk about his experiences and helping us choose the Car of the Day as well as presenting the trophy to the winner.”
The 2022 Motorfest will take place on November 5, with gates open at 9:00am.
Display vehicles need to register their attendance/participation via the Cooma Car Club website.
