Cosworth Impreza STi CS400 revealed

Ultimate Impreza breaks cover, and it's got the punch to threaten Porsche's 911 Turbo

We gave you a sneak peek last month and now Subaru has provided the first images of the Cosworth Impreza STi CS400 in all its glory.

The Cosworth-fettled tearaway is billed as the ultimate road-going Impreza, and this claim is borne out by a 0-100km/h dash of 3.7sec, virtually rivalling the accelerative capabilities of the new Porsche 911 Turbo. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Although best known for producing F1 engines and tweaking Fords (such as the 1980s Sierra that dominated touring car racing until the advent of Nissan's GT-R), Cosworth has also been working its magic on Subaru engines for the past several years.

In the case of the Cosworth Impreza STi CS400, the 2.5-litre boxer motor cops high-performance pistons, high-strength steel conrods, Cosworth-spec engine bearings, a redesigned head gasket and a high-pressure oil pump.

Cosworth's boffins have also reworked the turbocharger and come up with a new compressor design and wastegate actuator. Rounding off the mods are a bespoke exhaust system and remapped ECU.

The company quotes robust outputs of 295kW and 540Nm, dwarfing the 221kW and 407Nm eked out by the standard Impreza WRX STi.

Complementing the added urge is a beefed-up chassis -- with stiffer springs and lowered (by 10mm) ride height -- while stopping power is uprated via oversize AP Racing discs.

There's no mistaking it for a bogger STi, as visual tweaks include a new front bumper/spoiler with integrated foglights and there's also a large roof-mounted rear spoiler. Further beefing up its stance is a tasty set of 18-inch alloys that widen front and rear tracks by 12mm.

The interior hasn't been left untouched either, as driver and front passenger are ensconced by Recaro sports seats, and there's lashings of piano black trim on the centre console.

Now for the bad news, production will be limited to just 75 cars -- in silver, dark grey and red -- and they're all earmarked for the UK (priced at the equivalent of $88,470). Wot a shame...
