Crime-busting KITT rides again

The 'Hoff' rejoins forces with KITT, but this time the wheeled law enforcer is based on a Ford

Anyone over 25 years old will doubtless remember a bouffant-topped David Hasselhoff barking the command, "KITT, turbo boost!" in the 1980s TV series Knight Rider.

In the show, Hasselhof played Michael Knight, a crime fighter and mister-fixit who wreaked havoc on baddies in his all-black, artificial-intelligence-endowed Pontiac Trans Am (KITT).

Well, get set for a repeat dose, folks, because American TV station NBC is about to rekindle the series, beginning with a two-hour movie debut that airs in the US on February 17.

Hasselhoff returns in the role of an elder Michael Knight, but the Pontiac Trans Am is history as its role has been usurped by a Ford Mustang GT500KR.

This time around, there will be three versions of KITT. For basic run-of-the-mill crime fighting there's a 397kW Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR that plays the part of the "everyday Hero car".

More serious predicaments call for the KITT Attack, a "super high-speed version of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR Hero car that transforms into Attack mode with the help of air-ride technology and specialised body parts"

Then there's the KITT Remote, which is a driverless Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR version of the Hero vehicle.

As the original story resumes, the new KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) is "absolutely the coolest car ever created," boasts NBC.

NBC says its supercomputer-on-wheels is capable of hacking almost any system and its body -- thanks to its creator's work and nanotechnology -- is capable of actually shifting shape and color.

Plus, its artificial intelligence makes it the ideal crime-fighting partner: logical, precise and possessing infinite knowledge. It is the ultimate car -- and someone will be willing to do anything to obtain it.

Although yet to be confirmed, there's a good chance one of the Australian television networks will in due course pick up the new Knight Rider series.

Even if the script is lame and the acting wooden, musclecar freaks will still be able to derive entertainment from ogling the sinister black Mustang, which will no doubt be the centerpiece of the inevitable car-chase sequences.
