It’s been almost five years, but Australians will finally get a chance to sample Cupra’s hottest SUV to date; the Formentor VZ5, which has been officially confirmed for right-hand drive production.
The Formentor VZ5 launched in left-hand drive back in 2021, but as Cupra Australia product manager Jeff Shafer said at the time, Australia was a little late to the party.
Now, though, it’s a different story.
“Once we confirmed the new model Formentor for Australia, part of the homologation process was to get the new VZ5,” Cupra Australia’s acting brand director, Jerome Figuiere, said.
“The VZ5 will be the top of the [Formentor] range, and quite limited in supply.”
The all-wheel drive Formentor VZ5 will pump out a handy 287kW/480Nm from its Audi-sourced 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
It will be built in Martorell, Spain, and is limited to 4000 units globally.
Figuiere also confirmed the updated Formentor VZe will feature Cupra’s new second-generation plug-in hybrid system, which made its Australian debut in the 2025 Leon Vze Sportstourer earlier this month.
Specs and pricing for Australia are yet to be confirmed, but expect 20-inch rims, big brakes, wider arches and bespoke front and rear bumpers, as well as a funky interior treatment that will lean heavily into Cupra’s new sustainability stance.
