The production version of the stunning Cupra UrbanRebel concept is now all but certain to be known as the Cupra Raval when the battery-electric compact crossover hits the road mid-decade, as signified by a new trademark application we’ve uncovered.
Parent company Seat recently filed an application with IP Australia to protect the ‘Raval’ nameplate under Class 12 (vehicles and means of transport) as well as Class 27 (carpets and mats for vehicles), which follows similar registrations in other countries made earlier this year.
That’s icing on the cake as far as we’re concerned, with the 2025 Cupra Raval now primed to be the Spanish performance brand’s second model – after the Cupra Born EV – to be named after a Barcelona neighbourhood.
‘Raval’ has been a likely candidate since Cupra president and CEO Wayne Griffiths confirmed earlier this year that the production model’s name would be one close to the brand’s heart and derived from ‘UrbanRebel’.
“Now we have a car, the Cupra Born, which bears the name of the most eclectic neighbourhood,” Griffiths said in June, as reported by Coche Global.
“Soon we will have other models with a Barcelona name … when we say UrbanRebel, it reminds us of a Barcelona neighbourhood that will be named after it.”
Tellingly, press images of the UrbanRebel were taken at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona – right in the heart of the Raval district.
Production-spec details of the Cupra Raval are still to be revealed, however the small, sporty electric SUV will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture and is being developed in tandem with the Volkswagen ID.1.
The UrbanRebel was touted as offering a driving range of up to 440km, depending on the variant, thanks to its circa-60kWh battery pack and slippery styling.
DC charging rates of up to 120kW are expected, as found on the Cupra Born hot hatch.
The concept car’s power came from a single electric motor producing 166kW, but unlike the Born, the UrbanRebel (and, by extension, the Raval) adopts a front-wheel drive layout.
The Cupra Raval will be fast-tracked to Australia to support the fledgling Volkswagen Group brand, joining other all-new models including the Cupra Terramar and Tavascan due in 2024.
