Cupra UrbanRebel concept previews new electric crossover

Motorsport-inspired concept heralds upcoming pure-electric city SUV based on VW’s MEB platform

Sporty Spanish performance brand Cupra has released a fresh teaser of the Cupra UrbanRebel concept that it will unveil next week ahead of its public debut at the Munich motor show.

Drawing from motorsport, the UrbanRebel features a huge rear wing, but look past that and the latest short video reveals something altogether more sensible – a sharp-suited small SUV that's set to be on sale by 2025.

Co-developed alongside the upcoming SEAT Arona and the VW Up-replacing Volkswagen ID.2, the production Cupra will be based on the Volkswagen Group's MED architecture.

Claimed to mix "pure electrification, sustainability and performance with the thrilling aesthetics of the virtual world", the small Cupra is said to be the "most radical interpretation" of an urban EV.

The Volkswagen ID.2 is also set to be revealed at the Munich show, suggesting a similar 2025 on-sale date.

Of the three, expect the Cupra to get the more radical design, while the large rear wing with built-in LED light could hint at the brand's intention to go circuit racing or rallying.

In Europe, it's thought the production Cupra UrbanRebel will command a price tag of around €20,000 ($A32,000).

Helping the Volkswagen Group make money on an EV with a price that low are economies of scale. It's thought in the coming months both Skoda and Audi will also announce their take on the UrbanRebel.

All are tipped to share the MEB platform, electric motors and lithium-ion battery packs and be produced at a SEAT plant in Barcelona, Spain.

As well as presenting the UrbanRebel, Cupra will also use the Munich show to launch its first electric car, the Cupra Born hatch, which has much in common with the Volkswagen VW ID.3 but is claimed to be more fun to drive.

Finally, there will also be a production version of the Cupra Tavascan SUV concept – a pure-electric coupe-SUV that's been co-developed alongside the Volkswagen ID. 5.
