New short-range electric hatch could out-price BYD Dolphin

The News

Chinese challenger brand GAC is trying to make its presence known in the local marketplace by confirming a new, almost certainly sub-$30,000 version of the AION UT electric hatch.

The Key Details

  • Sub-$30K 2026 GAC AION UT coming
  • 44kWh battery pack, 320km WLTP range
  • Execs promising “standout” performance
  • Pricing and finer details to come
  • Due late 2026

The Finer Details

The new variant will feature a 44kWh battery pack instead of the familiar 60kWh unit, delivering a predictably reduced WLTP cruising range of 320km – vs 430km.

Local pricing and finer specifications will be announced closer to its release later in the year, though some have speculated the newcomer could feature a 100kW/145Nm motor instead of the established 150kW/250Nm unit used in the Premium and Luxury variants.

GAC Aion UT Luxury

Our money’s on that not being the case, going off a statement published by GAC Australia: “The model will be a standout performer when it comes to daily driving performance in this portion of the marketplace, when compared to other highly talked-about rivals.”

Such rivals include the MG4 Urban, BYD Dolphin and the freshly launched Geely EX2.

The Road Ahead

A sub-$30,000 drive-away starting price for the new entry-level AION UT would put it right at the pointy end of the budget EV market, potentially only beaten by the base BYD Atto 1 ($23,990 + ORCs).

More details will be announced “over the coming months”.
