The price of the Rolls-Royce Ghost has tumbled by $90,000 for the introduction of the facelifted Series II model.
At a media event yesterday it was revealed by the prestige brand that the Ghost Series II, which entered production about three months ago, is priced at $519,000 in short-wheelbase form for Australian buyers – or $545,000 including on-road costs in New South Wales.
The Ghost, which has contributed 85 per cent of all Rolls-Royce sales since it was introduced in 2009, has been a popular base for the manufacturer's Bespoke individualisation program. As much as 95 per cent of Rolls-Royce production features some optional Bespoke content, explaining in part why the importer chose to reduce the standard equipment for Ghost Series II and lower the price at the same time.
Explaining the rationale for the "empty canvas" approach, the company's Sven Ritter explained that it was about "giving the customer the option to choose what option he would like to have, rather than giving him content he might not have chosen in the first place."
Some of the features delisted in the migration to Series II include: 20-inch alloy heels (19-inch wheels now standard), chromed exhaust, camera system, individual seat configuration, picnic tables, Comfort Entry system, rear theatre, lambs wool floor mats and Drivers Assist 3.
Ritter, the general manager for Rolls-Royce in the Asia/Pacific region, also says that changing the Ghost's focus from luxury to driving satisfaction was a factor in the decision too.
Apart from the revised equipment list, the Ghost Series II introduces a new look that is surprisingly far-reaching, given its subtlety. While the LED headlights – with integrated daytime running lights – and the 'wake channel' in the bonnet, running from the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot to the scuttle, are the clearest signs of the stylist's art at work in the new car, the Ghost Series II also features new front bumper and quarter panels, and the door handles are now metal per se, rather than the chrome-plating of the previous units. Inside, the Ghost II features thicker-grain leather, polished metal finish for clock and instruments, angled rear seating and new front seats with adjustable under-thigh support for the front seat occupants – a staple of high-end models from Rolls-Royce's parent company, BMW. The Ghost II also gains an optional extended leather pack (for A and C pillars), head-up display/night vision. Other Bespoke options include two new decorative veneers – Paldao and Walnut Burr Crossband.
Mechanical changes are limited to the satellite-aided technology, tweaks to front and rear suspension, a new steering gear and hydraulic axle bearings in the rear suspension.
Capable of polishing off the 0-100km/h run in 4.9 seconds, the Ghost II is powered by a twin-turbo V8 rated at 420kW and 780Nm on premium unleaded fuel, which it drinks at the rate of 14L/100km in combined-cycle testing. Kerb weight is 2470kg and the car measures 5399mm in length and 1948mm in width on the short 32595mm wheelbase. The Extended Wheelbase model is 5569mm long and the wheelbase measures 3465mm.
Local deliveries of the updated Ghost will commence from early next year. Given the strong order bank for the revised model, production takes around three to four months from placing an order, and delivery to Australia adds two more months to the process.
