Cygnet hatched for Lady Moss

Racing legend's wife among the first to take delivery of Aston Martin's new pocket-sized hatch

Sir Stirling Moss' wife has become one of the first customers to receive the keys to Aston Martin's smallest-ever vehicle, the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet.

A surprise birthday present for the partner of the racing legend, the Cygnet was handed over in the century-old central rotunda of at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London.

Launched in May this year, each Cygnet is hand-crafted at Aston Martin HQ in Gaydon, the build taking over 150 hours to complete.  Like every Aston Martin, the car can be uniquely personalised to cater for individual tastes. At just three metres long, Cygnet is powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine developing just 72kW.

Specifications for Lady Moss's car include Aston Martin Racing Green paint, a tribute to the company's sports cars Sir Stirling raced in the 1950s, complemented by Obsidian Black leather upholstery with contrasting silver stitch work.

The car was handed over by HWM Aston Martin (dealership), the same supplier that built the cars Sir Stirling raced in 1951/52.

"My greatest partner in everything that I do, Susie is an amazing person and frankly the best wife a man could have," said Sir Stirling.

"Since seeing a pre-production Cygnet in January I knew that it was the perfect car for Susie; a proper little piece of British luxury and perfect for our life in town."

Sir Stirling's own driving career with Aston Martin saw him drive a number of the company's racing cars, including the famous DB3S and DBR1 models.
In 1959, Moss secured the company the World Sports Car Championship following victories in the DBR1 at such prestigious races as the Le Mans 24-hour.
