Dieter Zetsche has announced Daimler could cooperate with Apple and Google to ensure its future cars are safer and more intelligent.
Speaking to German magazine, Deutsche Unternehmerboerse, the Daimler boss said that autonomous cars and greater use of connectivity has now made software a key component of cars in the future and he was preparing Daimler for great collaboration with the likes of Google and Apple.
Zetsche said: “Google and Apple want to provide system software for cars and bring this entire ecosystem around Apple and Google into the vehicle.
"That can be interesting for both sides."
Following his remarks about greater collaboration, rumours have spread that Daimler could be the key manufacturing partner for either Apple or Google to make the self-driving iCar or Google equivalent.
On hearing suggestions Daimler had struck a deal with Apple, Zetsche was forced to add that his comments were "purely theoretical”, before adding:
"We don't want to become contractors who have no direct content with customers anymore and supply hardware to third parties," he said.
