Dakar your car at Australasian Safari

Standard vehicle ‘Production Class' makes offroad racing easier for newcomers at this year's Australasian Safari

If you fancy a shot at Dakar-style racing, but don’t have the cash to bankroll such an outfit, then the addition of a new Production Class to this year’s Australasian Safari may just pique your interest.

The new class allows standard vehicles to compete alongside Safari veterans, with only a few vital safety modifications required to get you in the hot seat.

According to event director Justin Hunt, Production Class is not just about outright speed, but will teach novice drivers the relevant skills required to go the distance.

“The Production Class won’t be about speed,” explained Hunt. “A safe and sensible drive in the event is likely to win the class and winners will receive full champagne honours at the ceremonial finish, plus it will also receive individual televised coverage.”

Along with the chance to compete is the opportunity to meet some of rally’s big-name auto, moto and quad category competitors, who may just help you hone the skills required for a podium finish.

Event organisers are now taking expressions of interest for Production Class participants, with a pre-event guide available for your perusal at the Australasian Safari website.

Course details are currently being finalised with all interested parties to submit their entry no later than August 12.

The 26th Australasian Safari will take place in the remote Western Australian outback, home to the event for the past five years, from September 22 to 30.
