The DR3 X St Hugo Collection was officially released at the start of March and sees the ever-energetic and charismatic Ricciardo once again try his hand at something new and unexpected.
For the past year, Ricciardo has been working closely with St Hugo Chief Winemaker Peter Murno to learn the tricks of the trade including vineyard practices, winemaking, maturation and blending. After all the hard work and learning, the new McLaren F1 team member has released his creation to the world.
"I grew up around wine, it’s in my blood," Ricciardo said in a statement announcing the DR3 X St Hugo release. The F1 star’s father was a hobby winemaker and he said he has been surrounded by the passion for the craft from a young age.
"I’m quite a curious kid, I always love learning things, and wine is a true craft, and I want to get in and get my hands dirty and make really spectacular wine that provides a unique perspective on what fine wine is. And to be able to do this with St Hugo’s Winemaker, Peter Munro, one of Australia’s best winemakers, is a real privilege.
"I may not be the same engineer who physically finesses the car, but I am the one who is driving it, and I have an instinct for what feels right. With winemaking, I’ll take a similar approach, and in this instance, Peter is the engineer."
The first release from the Ricciardo and St Hugo Wines collab is available to buy online and includes individually numbered bottles of 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 2014 Barossa Shiraz in a giftbox.
Now the info for wine lovers: "The 2015 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon at its finest, showcasing exceptional fruit sourced from the region's greatest vineyards. A classic Cabernet with regional violet florals, blackcurrant fruit and fine tannins."
While the 2014 Barossa Shiraz, "A single-vineyard wine from Ebenezer in the northern Barossa that is renowned for producing powerful yet elegant fruit. A wine of generous and opulent dark fruit supported by very fine, chalky tannins."
Both wines will set you back $65 and are said to be in a limited run, so you’ll need to be quick to try out DR’s winemaking skills. It's definitely a beverage best served in glassware rather than in a shoe, as is customary for a Ricciardo celebration.
