Ever wondered what Darth Vader would drive if he lived in the 21st century? Probably something like this!

As part of an escalation of Star Wars merchandise ahead of the launch of an all-new seventh film in 2015, Hot Wheels is releasing a range of new toys, including the Darth Vader car, originally a 1:64 scale toy car.

But Mattel also decided to commission a full-size working vehicle, which made its debut at the massive 2014 Comic-Con event in San Diego.

Although there's no Twin Ion Engine under the bonnet, the menacing Sith car is powered by a tuned version of the 6.2-litre LS3 V8 engine found in the HSV Clubsport. It pumps out around 392kW, which is transferred to the rear wheels, and sports a number of unique features, including an exterior and interior inspired by the dark side of the force.

Designed by Mattel and built by Picture Car Warehouse, Hollywood's go-to custom shop, the rear-drive vehicle makes use of carbon-fibre panels – including part of the front end – twin exhausts, LED brake lights and large custom MHT alloy wheels.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the car is its tripartite headlight array, surrounding a distinctly Vader-esque front grille.

The car also gets a special motorised lifting canopy, so the Sith Lord can easily slot into the pilot's seat, although the flip-top roof's effectiveness in the Maccas drive-through remains to be seen.

Perhaps the most menacing work of technological art since the ill-fated Death Star, the Darth Vader Hot Wheels car will be on display at the 2014 Comic-Con in San Diego in late July, and is expected to be showcased around the US afterwards.

The toy car will be sold in the US with a special collector's edition case that mimics Darth Vader's light sabre.
