Date at Hockenheim for driverless RS 7
Audi's 'piloted' RS 7 Sportback scheduled to complete a lap of German GP track at race speedsThe future will bring with it quite a shock when it arrives... less than a week from now.
That's when Audi's 'piloted' RS 7 Sportback sets off on a race-pace lap of the Hockenheimring – German's grand prix race circuit.
For the final round of the DTM (Germany Touring Car Championship) on October 19, the driverless Audi will circulate at speeds up to 240km/h on a demonstration run. Audi anticipates the on-board brain will be able to brake and corner at speeds only a professional race driver could achieve, for a lap time "just over two minutes," according to a press release issued by Audi today.
The company is not planning to offer autonomous motoring with different modes (one for racing, for instance), but the parameters for this particular RS 7 sound like they will be at the very high end of safe and practicable motoring, as proof of concept.
Australian viewers will be able to tune in to Audi MediaTV at 9:45PM AEDST on October 19 to see the car on the track. Audi will release further details on Tuesday of next week.
