Organisers of the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge have pushed the event back a couple of days from October 20 to October 22, in a move that returns Australia’s iconic sun-powered car ‘race’ back to its traditional start day of Sunday.
The 2023 edition will be the first time international teams have been welcomed onto Aussie soil in four years after a COVID-enforced hiatus.
Event director Chris Selwood said the adjustment back to the traditional Sunday commencement was not only nostalgic and more practical from an operations perspective, but also provided the chance for more spectators to attend the event.
“Infrastructure upgrades in the Darwin CBD make a Sunday start for the high-tech solar cars and multitude of support vehicles preferable to a weekday,” he said.
“This event is an investment in our future. The more opportunity we have to inspire those who can create change, the closer we come to real-world sustainable mobility and a healthier planet.
“We look forward to sharing future updates in the countdown to the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.”
Established in 1987, the World Solar Challenge invites teams to design, engineer, construct and race their own solar-powered electric vehicle for 3000km between Darwin and Adelaide.
The 2019 event featured 53 entries from 24 countries, with than 25 million people around the world following close to 1500 participants racing through Australia’s red centre.
