Deal hunter: No ORCs for 2023 VW Golf GTI

Plus an ABN special for the GWM Cannon XSR and roughly $10K off a Peugeot 3008 GT

The mainstream hot hatch market is shrinking in Australia – not in terms of sales but rather the number of options practical-minded performance fans have to choose from.

With the Ford Fiesta and Focus STs and the Renault Megane RS all now dead, hot hatch buyers really only have a couple of options left: the insanely popular Hyundai i30 N, the Cupra Leon or the grandfather of all hot hatches, the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The GTI was arguably the original hot hatch but now finds itself towards the top of the mainstream pricing tables despite being having more modest power outputs and performance capabilities than the intense i30 N.

But with at least a six-month wait on i30 N hatch deliveries at the moment, the 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI has suddenly become a very viable option given it’s on sale for ‘as little as’ $55,490 drive-away, especially when you consider it offers a heap more refinement and sophistication than the i30.

Volkswagen Australia has axed all the on-road costs of its hot hatch icon to save consumers in excess of $7000, depending on which state or territory they live in, which is a huge saving and brings the GTI right back into contention in terms of sheer value.

Aussies also love their utes, especially 4x4 dual-cabs with heaps of gear and off-road capability.

The catch is high-end pick-ups usually carry a high-end price tag, but not the 2023 GWM Cannon XSR and especially not if you have an ABN.

As the only twin-locked off-roader on the market this side of $80,000, the XSR’s usual $52,990 drive-away price is already worth a look, but ABN holders can now drive away in one from as little as $49,990 – about $8000 less than a barebones basic Isuzu D-MAX SX 1.9 4x4.

SUV buyers with a penchant for bargains, meantime, should look to the French brands as they continue trying to offload last year’s stock and, in the process, shave about $10,000 off the final asking price.

Case in point is the 2022 Peugeot 3008 GT automatic, which is on special for $54,990 drive-away instead of the usual $56,753 plus ORCs, though you’d better be quick because the promotion ends on September 30.
