The story of the legendary DeLorean DMC-12 and its equally famous maker, John DeLorean, will soon be showcased on the silver screen, it has been confirmed.
Alec Baldwin has been cast as lead role of the flamboyant entrepreneur in Framing John DeLorean, a film produced by Tamir Ardon which documents the meteoric rise and fall of the high-flying automotive executive.
It is the first time DeLorean’s story has been retold in such a capacity, using insights from close to the entrepreneur, including two children children, Zach and Kathryn, and archival footage spliced between recreated scenes.
Starring alongside Baldwin is Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Homeland, The Mentalist) and Josh Charles (Dead Poet’s Society, S.W.A.T, Four Brothers).
“John DeLorean was a maverick who defied the industry to create the DeLorean Motor Company, and bring to life his vision of a futuristic car, which was plagued with disaster from the start,” a press release promoting the film says.
“In an effort to keep his business and jet setting lifestyle afloat, he became embroiled in an FBI sting operation and appeared to be caught red-handed, exchanging millions for the transportation of cocaine. This is the true story of greed and endless ambition behind the car that would become one of the biggest cult item of the 1980s.”
While the DeLorean DMC-12 didn’t ultimately shoot to global dominance in the way that its maker had hoped, the famous American coupe from the 1980s remains something of a cult favourite – thanks in part to its starring role in the Back to the Future franchise.
Only this month, the DeLorean DMC-12 was recreated in Channel 9 series Lego Masters, complete with signature gullwing doors (pictured).
John DeLorean passed away in 2005, though at last count there were plans to revive the famous Texan operation.
Framing John DeLorean will be available internationally from late July. See the trailer below.
