Deni Ute Muster to name famous landmark

Competition winner to christen 'Ute on the Pole' at next week's Muster

The famous Ute on a Pole in Deniliquin, NSW, will finally receive a name next week when the local council picks a competition winner to christen one of Australia's most iconic motoring landmarks.

Celebrating the annual pilgrimage of utes to the rural centre, the red V8 Holden WB Kingswood ute has long been a drawcard for those attending the Deni Ute Muster -- and a competition to name the car has attracted a surprising number of suggestions.

"This competition has been amazing," exclaimed Deniliquin Ute Muster general manager, John Harvie. "Never in our wildest dreams would we have thought so many people would come up with so many different names. We will put those names to a vote at Deniliquin Council and announce the winner after the Cold Chisel concert on the Saturday."

Deniliquin is regarded as the 'Ute Capital of the World' and, in 1999, it entered the history books, claiming the Guiness Book of World Records title for the largest parade of Utes in the world, with 2,839 drivers taking part --  a record the event tries to break annually.

In recognition of this achievement, Deniliquin Council erected a WB V8 Holden Ute, on a pole, in 2000. The 'Ute on the Pole' has drawn thousands of visitors to Deniliquin each year, but until now, has never had an official name.

"The Deni Ute Muster is a great event but this year will be special. The winner of the competition will go down in folklore as the name behind the name. It is very exciting and all will be revealed soon," said Harvie.

The Deniliquin Ute Muster Play on the Plains Festival will be held next week, October 1 & 2 in Deniliquin NSW. Tickets are available through all Sanity music stores or online at
