Denza Z9 GT enters Porsche territory as UK price revealed

Denza has revealed UK pricing for its tyre-shredding flagship Z9 GT, and the 710kW monster is significantly more expensive than many expected. With the all-electric version priced from the equivalent of around $201,000 in Australian dollars, the British launch has raised questions over where the premium Chinese brand's flagship will sit when it arrives in Australian showrooms later in 2026.

If you'd pencilled in the Denza Z9 GT as the Chinese brand's shot at undercutting the Porsche Taycan, you might want to grab an eraser.

The car has now gone on sale in the UK from £105,000 (around $A201,000), placing it firmly in Porsche Taycan territory (which starts $181,200), rather than the bargain-priced disruptor category many had expected.

The flagship EV combines an outrageous 850kW tri-motor powertrain (with a 710kW ‘standard’ configuration available) generating up to 1210Nm of torque. It offers a claimed driving range of up to 600km (WLTP) or 820km (CLTC) and ultra-fast charging capability.

Indeed, the Denza Z9 GT can use the brands megawatt charger, which claims to charge the biggest 122.5kWh battery from 10 to 97 per cent in just nine minutes via a 1500kW charger.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version is also available from £95,000, pairing a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with three electric motors for slightly less total power and torque (640kW/1035Nm), and a combined driving range of up to 805 km (or 500 miles).

Depending on the regional variant, the Z9 GT can be had with a range of lithium-ion (LFP) batteries, the hero being a high-capacity 122.5kWh unit. There’s also a 102kWh battery pack, alongside plug-in hybrid options ranging from 38.5kWh to 63.8kWh.

The lofty UK pricing raises questions about where the Z9 GT will land in Australia and which vehicles and also which customer demographics it will target.

Until now, many expected the flagship to arrive somewhere around the $100K mark in Australia, give or take 10 per cent, reflecting the aggressive local pricing strategy applied to other BYD and Denza products, such as the B5 off-road SUV.

Australian buyers also generally pay less than UK customers for Chinese-built EVs thanks to lower import taxes, lower shipping costs and Australia's 10 per cent GST compared with the UK's 20 per cent VAT.

However, if UK pricing proves to be a reliable guide, industry expectations have shifted towards a local price somewhere between $150K and $180K, representing a significant move upmarket for the brand.

Denza Australia PR director Paul Ellis confirmed the Z9 GT will arrive before the end of the year, but stopped short of discussing pricing.

"The Z9 GT, the car that we showed at the Melbourne show, [will] go on sale before the end of the year. It'll go on sale in quarter four.

"We're still finalising the price with the factory but the production's all locked in for us to start selling that car in quarter four this year," he confirmed.

"It needs to be as competitive as we can make it," he added but wouldn’t be drawn on a ball park figure.

“I'd rather not speculate until we have a better idea with the factory," he added.

He also confirmed the standalone Denza Z sports car remains unconfirmed for Australia.

"The Z (not GT, the one revealed at Goodwood) hasn't been confirmed for this market yet."

The comments follow earlier remarks from Denza chief operating officer Mark Harland, who all but confirmed the Z9 GT will become the brand's fourth Australian model.

Should the Z9 GT arrive closer to $180K than $100K, it will find itself competing with some well-established premium performance models including the Porsche Taycan, Porsche 911 Carrera, BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, Audi RS e-tron GT and Maserati GranTurismo Folgore.

The Z9 GT remains locked in for an Australian launch during the fourth quarter of this year, with pricing still under negotiation between Denza Australia and the factory.

Whether the luxury challenger brand can convince buyers to embrace a price deep into six-figure territory may ultimately depend on the vehicle’s local specification and positioning.
