Mercedes-Benz has officially announced its C 450 AMG in Detroit overnight. The all-wheel drive model with twin-turbo V6 power bridges the divide between four-cylinder (W205) C-Class models and the full-house V8-powered C 63 AMG.
In that capacity the C 450 AMG is to be marketed as one of Benz's new AMG Sport models, the sub brand a parallel to BMW's M Performance Automobiles and Audi's S models in offering AMG-style performance, but without all the hallmarks, and at a lower cost. The C 450 will thus occupy the flagship role in the mainstream C-Class range, but at a lower price than the C 63 AMG – and without the C 63's V8 engine. Nevertheless, the C 450 will not be short of performance, the forced-induction V6 rated at 270kW and 520Nm. All-wheel drive will also offset the C 63's performance advantage in part, and Mercedes-Benz claims the C 450 will knock over the 0-100km/h run in 4.9 seconds. Speed will be limited to 250km/h.
The C 450 will be relatively clean and green, however, with combined-cycle fuel consumption as low as 7.6L/100km (7.7 for the wagon version) for the Euro 6-compliant car. Benz has specified a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission for the C 450, which features five drive programs (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual) that can be selected to adjust the suspension, steering and drivetrain calibration to suit the driver's preferences. Benz has set up the all-wheel drive system for 33 per cent of the torque sent to the front, and the 67 per cent balance channelled to the rear.
Suspension components (steering knuckles and load-bearing joints) have been sourced from the C 63 for the C 450 with the three-setting adjustment for the dampers in the car's Ride Control system shared with the V8 variant. Both front and rear independent systems are tuned for more negative camber.
Four-wheel disc brakes are all ventilated, with rotors measuring 360mm in diameter for the front, 320mm for the rear. As standard, the C 450 AMG comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, shod with 225/45 R 18 tyres at the front or 245/40 R18 tyres at the rear.
Standard equipment for Australia is expected to include Adaptive Brake, Attention Assist, Audio 20 multimedia infotainment system with USB, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, auto-stop/start, ISOFIX child safety seat anchorage and sports pedals.
