DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Chevrolet Corvette Z06 leaked

Ferrari-killing 462kW track-attack Corvette breaks cover ahead of Detroit reveal

One of the stars of the 2014 Detroit motor show, the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06, has been leaked ahead of its of official reveal in the USA.

And you can bet your bottom dollar it's looking to take a few Ferrari scalps when it finally hits the road.

Images of the race track-ready Chevrolet Corvette Z06 were leaked on several US websites yesterday, revealing the high-performance sports car's aggressive new look.

Finished in an unmissable yellow hue with black accents, the Z06 'Vette has a more menacing aesthetic than its donor car, the 335kW V8-powered Corvette (pictured in red) that broke cover almost one year ago to the day at the 2013 Detroit motor show.

Featuring a larger front grille designed to feed more air to its (as-yet unknown) V8 engine, a pronounced bonnet bulge with a black inlay, blistered wheel arches and a much lower ride height, the Z06 has race-track aggression written all over it.

The hard-charging Chevy flagship sports car appears to be wearing a carbon-fibre front spoiler that joins the flared front wheel arches. Even the side skirts get carbon finishes.

There's a rear lip spoiler and a large rear diffuser designed to keep the car's rear-end stuck to the blacktop, and larger wheels no likely to be shod with ultra-grippy tyres.

An interior shot of the car has also been leaked, but it doesn't appear have the sense of occasion present in Italian exotics - despite the car's expected Ferrari-matching performance.

Although the exact engine type won't be known until tomorrow, Chevrolet accidentally leaked the Corvette Z06's power and torque figures a week ago, so we know it'll pump out roughly 462kW and 880Nm.

That should be more than enough mumbo to see it rip from 0-100km/h in the low 3.0 second bracket, matching cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and new Lamborghini Huracan. Flat-strap, it'll eclipse 300km/h, no worries.

There's been talk of supercharged V8 engines lurking under the hood of the new Corvette Z06, or possibly even a naturally-aspirated 7.0-litre big block bent eight, but Chevrolet could surprise everyone with turbocharged V8.

With a torque figure of almost 900Nm, it seems almost certain forced induction will be part of the recipe.

All the details will be revealed tomorrow, so stay tuned.
