DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Ford GT reborn

Phoenix concept expected to revive iconic GT sports car
British magazine Autocar is reporting that Ford will introduce a new concept car as successor to the GT (pictured) – the road-going, 21st century update of the Le Mans-winning GT40.
A leaked floor plan for the area Ford has leased at Detroit's Cobo Centre, where the North American International Auto Show will open this week, clearly shows a concept car named Phoenix will be the focal point for the whole stand. With both an original GT40 and the GT marked out on the plan alongside the Phoenix 'nest', there's reason to speculate the new car will draw on the heritage of the race car and its supercar counterpart.
The question currently begging concerns the look for Phoenix. Will it be styled largely as the GT was back in 2006 – prior to the GFC – or will it be an altogether new design with just a few scattered heritage cues taken from the earlier cars?
Autocar anticipates Phoenix will be the standard bearer for Ford Performance, a new sub brand that will support 12 new sports models to be launched globally over the next five years. Ford Performance will bring together staff from motorsport, road and parts divisions in a team that smacks of now defunct FPV, but on a global level.
Other cars likely to put in an appearance on the Ford stand in Detroit include new F-150 Raptor and Hummingbird 2 – an even stronger version of the Mustang GT350.
