A new-generation Acura MDX has made its world debut at the Detroit motor show, but Honda is unlikely to introduce the upmarket Japanese SUV in Australia.
The all-new seven-seat crossover replaces the Canadian-built MDX that was priced from $69,990 in Australia between 2003 and 2007. Honda Australia ceased to sell the SUV here when right-hand drive production ended.
The new MDX, entry-level versions of which will be front-wheel drive for the first time, is unlikely ever again to be produced in right-hand drive form due to a lack of demand for large SUVs in key RHD markets like the UK.
The new CR-V will therefore continue to be Honda’s only SUV in Australia’s booming SUV market, at least until the arrival of the production version of the smaller Urban SUV Concept, which was also revealed at Detroit and hits Japanese street in late 2013. For the record, Acura’s 2014 MDX was revealed in prototype guise and will be built in Alabama for the US by mid-2013.
Powered by an “all-new” 3.5-litre direct-injection SOHC i-VTEC petrol V6 that’s claimed to deliver “high torque and excellent fuel economy”, Honda says a lightweight chassis and fully refurbished front and rear suspension systems will make “acceleration performance and driving comfort appropriate for a luxury SUV”.
Wrapped in an all-new bodyshell that’s about 60mm lower than before but offers similar interior space to its predecessor, the new MDX wears Acura’s new design language and ‘Jewel Eye’ LED headlights.
