Hyundai's funky three-and-a-half-door liftback coupe will be coming to Australia in mid February this year, followed later by the high(er) performance turbocharged version, which broke cover in the United States at the Detroit Motor Show.
We drove the entry-level the Veloster in Korea and though it was capable enough, it lacked a little mumbo. Which is where the new 150kW Veloster Turbo comes in...
Powered by Hyundai's new Gamma 150kW 1.6-litre turbo, four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine, the 1270kg coupe could be seen as a competitor to the upcoming Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ sports coupes - albeit a front drive competitor.
Other rivals should include the MINI Cooper S and Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Hyundai will import the new turbo Veloster to Australia but says "...timing, specification and pricing of Australian Veloster turbo variants are yet to be confirmed."
Peak power of 150kW at 6000rpm and 264Nm torque at 1750rpm will give the blown Veloster the sort of zip missing from the 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated 103kW/167Nm variant.
The 2012 Hyundai Veloster Turbo should also dispatch the 0-100km/h a lot quicker than the naturally-aspirated version's 9.0 second effort.
Gearbox options include six-speed manual and auto units, and we expect the latter to be of the dual clutch variety, or DCT in Hyundai speak.
The photos of the new Veloster Turbo coupe reveal visual tweaks to differentiate the high output model, including LED daytime running lights and a larger air intake in the front fascia. There's also a more aggressive body kit complete with rear diffuser, within which reside a pair of larger (now circular) exhaust outlets.
