Fresh from revealing its controversial new model naming strategy just before Christmas, Infiniti has now released the first teaser video of its all-new Q50 sedan.
Confirmed to make its global public debut at the Detroit motor show on January 14, the Q50 will replace the G sedan as the Japanese luxury brand’s answer to volume-selling German medium sedans including BMW’s volume-selling 3 Series, Audi’s A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, as well as the new-generation Lexus IS to be launched globally in March.
While the outgoing G37 sedan is not sold in Australia, the Q50 has been confirmed for local release in late 2013, when the all-new premium mid-size sedan will join the G Coupe and Convertible models released in December.
As we’ve reported, the Q50 will be the first Infiniti model released under the new naming structure, which will see the replacement for the two-door G models rebadged as the Q60 and the next-generation large M sedan to be renamed the Q70 when it appears in 2014.
Similarly, Infiniti’s SUV and crossover model names will start with QX from next year, with the EX to become the QX50, the JX to be called the QX60, the FX (the only Infiniti SUV available in Australia so far) to be rebadged as the QX70 and the range-topping Nissan Patrol-based QX56 to be relaunched as the QX80.
?In an attempt to explain its confusing new nomenclature, Infiniti has also revealed its new BMW 5 Series rival will be topped by a 400kW-plus 3.0-litre petrol V6-powered competitor for the M5.
As with its chief German rivals, the Q50 is expected to be Infiniti’s volume-selling model and the official teaser video shows its radical new headlight design features distinctive ‘eyebrows’ formed by LED daytime running lights.
Taking clear inspiration from the Infiniti LE concept revealed at last year’s New York motor show, the Q50’s headlights also feature an adaptive Xenon beam punctuated by a semi-circular parking lamp.
