DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Kia shows off more of its BMW 3 Series-rival

Kia has released what's claimed to be its fourth and final video tease of its first ever sports sedan, expected in Australia from September this year.

The new rear-drive sedan will be unveiled at the 2017 Detroit motor show on January 8.

Revealing far more than any other previous film, in the short vid we see glimpses of the production car's sporty front and rear headlamps, its LED light signature, 'Tiger Shark' front grille, bonnet vents, side air intakes, dashes of carbon-fibre in the interior, twin exhaust tips and what looks like an engine shroud covering a wide V6 engine.

Set to be the sportiest-ever car made by the Korean car maker, as predicted from what we've seen, the rear-wheel drive draws a lot from the 2011 Kia GT concept.

It’s already been revealed Kia’s first rear-wheel drive sports sedan will be its quickest production model ever, hitting 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds. That's roughly as fast as a Holden SS V Redline.

Top speed, meanwhile, will be around 244km/h following another earlier video tease.

Set to be called the Kia Stinger GT, the fast rear-wheel drive is set to be the flagship of the range of sport sedans.

As we’ve reported, the 2017 Stinger sedan model range begins with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol model priced around $40,000 and will be topped by the circa-$50,000 GT flagship.

It's tipped to be on sale in Australia from September 2017.

The latter – and the subject of Kia’s long-winded reveal campaign, will be powered by the Hyundai group’s new 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6. It will offer about 290kW of power and 535Nm of torque and could be matched with Kia’s new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Confirmed for Australian release in the third quarter of next year, just before the end of local Holden Commodore production, the Stinger would therefore provide the ideal starting point for what could become Kia’s first entry in Australia’s premier motorsport category.

Developed under the CK code name and likely to be based on the same new rear-drive platform as Hyundai’s first rival for the BMW 3 Series, the upcoming Genesis G70 sedan, the coupe-like Kia Stinger will be positioned above the Optima as Kia’s flagship rear-drive passenger car.

Like all Kias sold here, the Korean brand’s first legitimate driver’s car, which has been spotted testing and even leaked in final production form, will undergo an extensive local tuning program before its Australian release in September.
