Lexus has debuted its updated RC F range with the introduction of the all-new RC F Track Edition. The model is expected in Australian showrooms by May 2019.
Unveiled at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show – and developed in conjunction with input from Lexus race teams in the Super GT and IMSA series – the Lexus RC F Track Edition promises to "boost the performance and freshen the overall look" of the Japanese manufacturer’s flagship performance coupe.
It blends what its maker insists is "a serious performance car for the track with the luxury and craftsmanship expected of a Lexus".
Highlights of the RC F Track Edition include a carbon-fibre roof and bonnet, titanium muffler and tailpipes, Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors and a "substantial weight reduction and styling enhancements that improve aerodynamics and increase downforce," according to the Japanese luxury car brand.
Downforce increases are rated at 26kg while preliminary estimates put total weight reduction at 65kg compared with the previous RC F – 25kg of which comes from the brake and wheel package alone.
The enhancements join standard launch control and a revised secondary intake to help the 5.0-litre V8 power the RC F Track Edition to 100km/h in "around four seconds".
The carry-over eight-speed transmission is the only gearbox available.
Lexus says the new RC F variant helps evolve the brand’s performance strategy, Lexus International executive vice president, Koji Sato, impressing the benefits of continuing research and development.
"These [special edition] models help further distinguish the F brand by offering fast, durable, highly capable performance cars that rely on a range of technologies to help make their performance accessible to drivers of all skill levels," he said.
Performance improvements are found throughout the RC F Track Edition including hollow rear axle shafts, a smaller intake manifold and air-conditioning compressor, aluminium toe-control and upper suspension support brackets, stiffer engine, rear suspension bushings and steering rack mounts.
The special model is shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres whose profile shape, tread pattern and rubber compound are designed specifically to prevent understeer and are unique to Lexus.
Stylistically, the RC F Track Edition features stacked LED headlights with built-in DRLs, while the signature spindle grille gains a lower lip opening that stretches across the bottom to create a visually shorter fascia.
New tail-lights integrate neatly into a reshaped bumper to give the RC F Track Edition "a cleaner, more chiselled appearance," Lexus says.
The interior is crafted with red leather and Alcantara seat accents, and red carbon trim on the door cards and dashboard. Four paint colours are offered: White Nova, Sonic Titanium, Graphite Black and Matte Grey, the latter exclusive to the RC F Track Edition.
Production of the updated Lexus RC F and the RC F Track Edition will begin in the second-quarter of 2019 with Lexus Australia spokesman, Nick Raman, saying "We will introduce the RC F Track Edition and updated RC F range in May 2019."
