
North America’s largest annual motor show opens on Monday (Tuesday Australian time) and organisers claim the majority of more than 50 confirmed vehicle debuts will be seen for the first time anywhere in the world.
Many of them have already been previewed and by our count there will be up to 20 global production vehicle reveals and at least seven concepts shown for the first time worldwide.
Underlining the importance of the globe’s second largest automotive market behind China, the 2013 North American International Auto Show will host major unveiling s from all major Japanese car-makers and Germany’s big three luxury brands and Volkswagen, as well as the big three US car-makers.
General Motors will be out in force with its remaining brands, led by a fully redesigned Corvette coupe and Silverado pick-up from Chevrolet and the Volt-based Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid.
Ford will unveil its new 2014 Transit commercial vans, a concept version of its next-generation 2015 F-150 pick-up and the Lincoln MKC luxury SUV, based on Ford’s upcoming Kuga.
Fiat Chrysler, meantime, is expected to unveil all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models, as well as a new GT flagship for Dodge’s small Dart sedan.
German luxury car warfare will continue with Audi revealing its bahnstorming twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8-powered RS7 Sportback, BMW lifting the lid on its 3 Series Coupe-replacing 4 Series concept and a facelifted Z4, and Mercedes-Benz showing its facelifted E63 AMG sedan and wagon, new-look E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet and all-new CLA compact sedan.
Not to be outdone, Volkswagen will reveal a concept version of an all-new seven-seat SUV to be positioned between the Tiguan and Touareg, while Bentley will espouse its new 325km/h Continental GT Speed Convertible and Maserati’s redesigned Quattroporte will also appear in Detroit.
Japanese luxury brands Lexus and Infiniti will stage global debuts of their two new mid-size sedan volume-sellers, the respective IS and Q50, both of which go on sale in Australia this year.
Hyundai will confirm its intention to produce a direct rival in the form a redesigned Genesis sedan, which will be previewed in concept form, while Kia will show a facelifted K7/Cadenza large sedan and Honda’s next-generation MDX will break cover as the 2014 Acura MDX.
Of the mainstream Japanese brands, Toyota will hit out with the new Corolla sedan-previewing Furia concept, Honda will unveil its all-new Jazz-based city-SUV and Nissan will reveal a next Murano concept, new small hatchback and upgraded Leaf.
