Bugatti announced at the Monterey Car Week last weekend that it plans to makes 40 examples of its track-only Bugatti Bolide hypercar, despite originally planning it as a one-off special.
Touted as the most extreme, uncompromising, fastest and lightest vehicle concept in the French brand’s history, the original Bugatti Bolide prototype shed an astonishing 756kg from the portly 1996kg kerb weight of the Bugatti Chiron.
Revealed in October last year, the 2024 Bugatti Bolide was created to go toe-to-toe with the likes of the McLaren Senna GTR and Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR.
However, the transformation from concept to reality has added back in 210kg via an FIA-compliant HANS system, fire extinguisher, six-point harness and fuel system, plus a set of centre-lock rims.
Still, a kerb weight of 1450kg remains impressive.
On the powertrain front, the incredible quad-turbo 8.0-litre W16 remains, but instead of producing 1360kW on 110 RON fuel, engineers had to wind power back to 1176kW to allow owners run on the more readily available 98 RON premium.
Despite producing less power, the turbo W16 has been tuned to rev higher and has been developed with a new intake and exhaust for faster responses needed for track work.
Commenting on the decision to make a limited run of 40 cars, Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann said: "The Bolide generated a great deal of enthusiasm and intrigue last year.
"Following its presentation, a significant number of enthusiasts and collectors asked us to develop the experimental Bolide as a production vehicle. I was absolutely amazed by the reactions and feedback from customers from all over the world."
Confirming first customer deliveries would begin in 2024, Bugatti says each Bolide would be priced at €4 million ($A6.4m) before local taxes.
For that, Bugatti says it will offer owners exclusive VIP track days to allow drivers to exploit the extreme levels of performance that the Bolide will be capable of delivering in spades.
