Diamond Jubilee for Great Ocean Road

The VACC is supporting the 75th anniversary celebrations of Victoria's premier scenic drive

2007 marks the 75th anniversary of Victoria's Great Ocean Road and to celebrate, the VACC is coordinating a vintage car procession to retrace the road's opening tour of 1932, this Sunday, November 25.

Widely regarded as one of, if not the most scenic drives in Australia, the Great Ocean Road wends its way along Victoria's 'shipwreck coast', around the Otway ranges.

Work began on the road as long ago as 1919 and the major infrastructure project provided employment for up to 3000 returned soldiers who fought during World War One.

The project was completed in 1932 when it met up at Apollo Bay with the pre-existing Country Roads Board sections to Warrnambool.

To mark that occasion (pictured), the Victoria Minister for Roads, Tim Pallas, will flag off the 40 pre-1933 cars from the Automotive Centre of Excellence at Melbourne's Docklands precinct from 11 am. Cars are expected to take four days to complete the 450km route to Warrnambool. The Fox Collection will be open for public viewing also and proceeds from the day will go to 'Retina Australia Victoria'.
