The Hyundai i20 line-up, due in local showrooms during the third quarter of this year, could include a diesel option.
The new Euro-designed hatchback is offered with 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol, and 1.4-litre turbodiesel engines in markets such as the UK. Australians will at least see the 1.4-litre petrol engine model.
As per our earlier report (more here) Hyundai Australia has not yet confirmed local specification for the Light Car, however company spokesman Ben Hershman told the Carsales Network that a diesel option for the i20 would be considered after market appraisal closer to launch.
"We're committed to introducing diesel [options] across our range," said Hershman, but on a case-by-case basis and "not just for the sake of having another diesel model."
Currently HMAC offers the i30, Sonata, Grandeur and Santa Fe with diesel, but not Tucson. Recent i30 hatch sales are around 50:50 diesel to petrol.
The i20 will sit under the i30, alongside the Getz model. Hershman says the i20 will be sold as the brand's more upmarket Light Car, aimed at the likes of Mazda2 and VW Polo. That bodes well for a diesel i20, because Hyundai has previously expressed the view that diesel-engined light cars would have to sell at a premium over the petrol siblings.
