A potent new diesel version of the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be launched in Germany next week and it’s likely to become available next year in Australia.
When it arrives some time in 2020, the new turbo-diesel Mercedes-Benz G 400d will undercut the only other variant of the boxy off-roader currently available here, the near-$250,000 Mercedes-AMG G 63 but still will not be cheap.
Fitted with a higher-output version of the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel seen in the G 350d (210kW/600Nm, pictured), the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G 400d will reportedly deliver 242kW and also more torque.
Mercedes-Benz Australia is yet to release the G 350d and has all but ruled out the petrol V8-powered G 500. Meantime the waiting list for the AMG G 63 extends into 2020 -- despite its price tag.
Now it seems the G 350d will be passed up by Mercedes-Benz Australia in favour of the newer and more powerful G 400d, which will make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
The G 350d is claimed to hit 100km/h in 7.4sec on its way to a 199km/h top speed. Combined fuel consumption is listed at 9.8L/100km and CO2 emissions at 259g/km.
The G 400d should eclipse the G 350d in all key performance areas, except perhaps fuel economy and CO2, where it should match the 350d.
It won’t be cheap, however. In Germany, the G 350d opens the G-Class range priced from 95,021.50 euros ($A153,548), but the G 400d is likely to be positioned closer to the G 500, which costs 107,040.50 euro ($172,970).
