LDV Australia has confirmed it will launch a new mid-size diesel commercial van Down Under before the end of this year, positioned alongside the new 2024 LDV eDeliver 7 electric van released this week.
To be known simply as the LDV Deliver 7, the new diesel van will undercut the EV’s current $60,000 starting price and is expected to renew the Chinese brand’s fight with established diesel vans including the Toyota HiAce and Ford Transit Custom.
Speaking at the launch of the eDeliver 7 in Sydney this week, LDV Australia general manager Dinesh Chinnappa said diesel would make up a crucial part of the van’s sales mix, despite China’s increasing move to EV production.
“We’ll be ordering the diesel before the end of the year and we’ll try to get stock before the end of the year,” he confirmed.
“We had no choice but to launch with the electric version first. We’ve been saying for some time that the game has shifted in China.
“They are now designing electric first and then we have to go and mount an argument for diesel. Their market has moved.”
LDV’s decision to offer a diesel Deliver 7 will likely sound the death knell for its current ageing LDV G10 commercial van.
Built on a newer platform and including a host of more modern technologies, the diesel Deliver 7 would be comprehensively safer and more refined than the G10 as the Chinese brand works hard to sharpen its commercial offerings.
“It’s possible the G10 will [bow out],” Channappa said. “It’s a decision we need to make in conjunction with the OEM. It’s on the table for discussion but it’s not a decision that we’ve made yet.”
