Discovery celebrates its silver anniversary

Land Rover unveils Discovery XXV Special Edition to commemorate its 25th year
The Land Rover Discovery has stamped its mark as a prestige family SUV with genuine off-road ability through 25 years and four generations. Now, to celebrate the silver anniversary of the model's original launch, Land Rover has announced the XXV Special Edition, with bespoke exterior styling cues and distinctive Windsor leather interior.
Priced from $109,430 (plus on-road costs), the flagship Discovery XXV model is available in a choice of four exterior colours – Causeway Grey, Santorini Black, Fuji White and, to celebrate the jubilee, Indus Silver. The Discovery XXV Special Edition is further identified by unique 'XXV' badging on the front doors and tailgate, distinctive 20-inch five-split-spoke forged alloy wheels in light polished silver, Narvik Black grille and mirror scalps, Dark Atlas (grey) garnishes on the grille and fender vents, silver full-length roof rails, body-coloured door handles and a stainless steel bumper accessory tread plate.
The interior, which builds on the luxurious HSE specification, adds XXV-embossed Windsor leather linings to the dash fascia, instrument panel binnacle and door top rolls. The rich upholstery is available in a choice of three hues – Ebony, Cirrus or dual-tone Ebony/Cirrus – and is matched with twist pile carpet mats and a leather-wrapped wooden steering wheel.
"Since its inception the Land Rover Discovery has been pivotal to the success of the brand and has now become an iconic design in its own right," explained Jaguar Land Rover group marketing manager, Phil Popham.
"Discovery has led the way in terms of innovation, featuring technologies such as Terrain Response, which made off-roading much more accessible. The Discovery XXV Special Edition is the ultimate in sophisticated versatility and a fitting tribute to the legendary status of this iconic Land Rover."
Now sold in more than 170 markets, the Discovery is one of the world's most awarded cars, with over 200 credits to its name. Although significantly updated in 2010, as the Discovery 4, the current Discovery has been in production since 2004, making it the oldest model in the Land Rover portfolio outside of the Defender.
Despite its age, however, the Discovery is still one of the best selling cars in its class locally, and in August enjoyed a year-on-year increase of 11.4 per cent, totalling 1728 sales year to date (2014). The Discovery is the fourth-best selling SUV in its segment behind the BMW X5 (2770 units), Mercedes-Benz ML-Class (1967) and Range Rover Sport (1780).
The Land Rover Discovery was first launched in Plymouth, UK in 1989 and in 2012 celebrated the production of its one-millionth model. Across four generations, the Discovery has implemented a number of 'firsts', including Land Rover's celebrated Terrain Response four-wheel drive system and the much-copied Hill Descent Control.
It has also been the vehicle of choice for a number of explorers, including Bear Grylls, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Ray Mears, Monty Halls and polar explorer, Ben Saunders.
