Disney Research and robotic experts, ZTH Zurich, have released footage of its latest creation, the VertiGo robot that appears to defy gravity by being able to climb walls.
Reportedly created to provide the basis of a rescue robot, the new VertiGo cleverly uses two tilting propellers to drive up walls. According to its makers, this allows the robot to climb and drive over even slippery surfaces.
In the future drones like the VertiGo will be used, instead of humans, in dangerous situations for reconnaissance and rescue operations. The robotic drone might also have a military application too.
So far land drones development has been limited because of their difficulty traversing uneven, rough terrain. The VertiGo, it’s hoped, could help pave the way for a breakthrough, says its makers.
