A Rivian ute's onboard 110-volt power outlet has come to the rescue, enabling Dr Christopher Yang to complete a procedure despite a power outage in the Texas city of Austin.
There's been much said about the usability of electric commercial vehicles and whether the weekends will be over for traditional ute lovers. This quick-thinking doctor has certainly challenged that thinking with his nuts idea!
Dr Christopher Yang was set to perform a vasectomy at his clinic in Austin when the area was hit by a power outage. His patient didn’t want to reschedule the appointment because he’d already taken time off from work, so Dr Yang and his team came up with an innovative solution.
Dr Yang posted photos to his Twitter account which showed an extension cord running from his Rivian R1T into his clinic. "Patient didn't want to reschedule cause he already had time off," the post reads. "Electrocautery was normal, procedure went great!"
I performed what is likely the world's first @Rivian powered vasectomy today. Power in clinic went out, patient didn't want to reschedule cause he already had time off. Electrocautery was normal, procedure went great! #rivianstories #rivian pic.twitter.com/VLDg91r37d

In an interview with WGLT, the urologist said he had already cancelled and rescheduled several other planned procedures due to the power outage in the city. One of his staffers jokingly suggested doing the procedure using Yang’s 4-month-old Rivian R1T ute as a power source.
“When talking to the patient, we mentioned that we could just reschedule the procedure itself, or, if he was up for it, we could do the vasectomy using power from the truck. And he had a good laugh as well, and we agreed,” Yang said.
Vasectomies don’t require a lot of power, just enough for an electrocautery device. So with a long extension cord running from his parking spot to the patient’s room, the EV ute powered the 15-20 minute procedure as well as a small fan in the room for the medical team.
“After we were done, I told his family. We all had a good laugh together too,” Yang said.
The Rivian R1T has two 120-volt outlets in its bed, which we are sure that Rivian had originally intended its owners to use for camping, cooking or worksite power tools rather than performing surgery. Sure brings a whole new meaning to utility.
