Dodge Viper set to return in 2020

US car maker to relaunch Brutish supercar to celebrate three decades since the original, will get 520kW V8 in place of old V10

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Dodge brand is secretly developing a powerful, lightweight, all-new supercar replacement for the Viper, according to a new report.

Set to also be called the 'Viper', according to US title

, the introduction of the American-made supercar is set to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original Viper going on sale.

That means the new Viper will be on sale in 2020.

Built around a lightweight aluminium spaceframe, weight is curbed thanks to the heavy use of carbon-fibre for the body.

In the Viper, the entry engine will push out around 410kW, although a more powerful turbo- or supercharged version is expected to must a mightier 520kW.

Both a traditional six-speed manual and a two-pedal version are likely.

With a kerbweight expected to dip below 1300kg, the most powerful Viper is expected to hit 100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds and top out at more than 340km/h.

Like before, the Dodge brand is expected to develop the Viper for GT3 racing.

That's means it's highly likely there will be a replacement for the road-legal but track-focused Viper ACR.

Sadly, it's still unlikely that FCA will greenlight a right-hand drive version ruling the third-generation Viper out for Australia.

It's not been confirmed where the Viper will be made following the closure of its dedicated factory last year.

Instead, it's almost certain the Viper will be made by a third-party manufacturer.

Pricing for Dodge's Viper is expected to begin in the US at around $90,000 ($A120,000).
